Double Dutch Random Sampler - a dutch windmill block tutorial

Hi everyone, It is my turn to show you a block you could add to your double dutch random sampler! This is the third block we are doing.

If this is new to you we will start with some introductions:
- you can find the announcement of the Double Dutch Random Sampler QAL here at Lotjes blog.
- you can find the tutorial for the first block here on her blog.
- you can find the tutorial for the second block on Muriel's blog here
- you can find our dutch modern quilting group "double dutch" on Flickr here
- and you can join the QAL on Flickr here

Pfff, that was a lot of information I'm sure, but it's nice to have it summed up in one place.

Now for my journey on choosing a block. I am not good at making blocks up, I almost never do it and if I do, explaining how to make it to someone else who is not sitting next to me is even more difficult. So I decided to keep it simple. Like Nigella Lawson says in everyone of her cooking books: Please don't make a new and complex recipe when you are getting company. Instead make something simple that you did before, so you can still enjoy the evening.

We agreed on varying the sizes of the blocks within the boundaries of 3-6-9-12 inch. The first 2 blocks measure six inch. So I made the blocks in a nine inch size, but I have added the measurements for making it 6 inch (finished) or 12 inch (finished). So you can make it a size you like, or multiple sizes, which will have a nice effect in the sampler I think.

My inspiration was a block I made in the Farmer's Wife Quilt Along called Box. Like a lot of blocks in this quilt I really don't get this name. What has this block got to do with a box? It reminds me of a dutch windmill, so I thought it appropriate for this quilt-along.

You will need two contrasting fabrics. And cut them up:
  • For a nine inch finished block cut (this is the one I made):
    • color 1: 4 squares of 3 7/8 (you can cut them 4 inch too and trim later if you prefer) and 1 of  3 1/2 inch.
    • color 2 (background): 4 squares of 3 7/8 (you can cut them 4 inch too and trim later if you prefer)
  • For a six inch finished block cut:
    • color 1: 4 squares of 3 3/8 (you can cut them 3,5 inch too and trim later if you prefer) and 1 of  2 1/2 inch.
    • color 2 (background): 4 squares of 3 3/8 (you can cut them 3,5 inch too and trim later if you prefer)
  • For a twelve inch finished block cut:
    • color 1: 4 squares of 5 3/8 (you can cut them 5,5 inch too and trim later if you prefer) and 1 of  4 1/2 inch.
    • color 2 (background): 4 squares of 5 3/8 (you can cut them 5,5 inch too and trim later if you prefer)

Step 1:
Match the 4 squares of both fabrics in sets of two (right sides together) and make HST's (half square triangles) of them. For less experienced sewers; there are lots of lovely tutorials out there. I will try to give a comprehensible explanation and show some pictures:

You draw a diagonal line on the squares and sew a scant 1/4 inch of each side of the line. When  finished, cut along the line to seperate two triangles. Fold them open, press open and cut it to size (when you are making the nine inch block: 3 1/2 inch). A lovely "cutting to size" tutorial for HST's, you can find here.

Some pictures to show what I mean:

Step 2:
Lay out your squares to form the block:

Sew the squares into rows and the rows into a block!

But just to inspire you can choose other layouts as well:

I hope you like it! If you have any questions please let me know!

starry scrappy night

I'm the queen bee of the comfort circle again in January. I decided to make the blocks, so everyone could have a head start if they wanted. I've used this tutorial, but decided to use all colors instead of one. I love the idea of the wonky white stars popping up all over the quilt with a random touch to it. They are big blocks (17,5 inch finished) so I will probably make two smaller quilts of them.

And I finished the hand sewn (!) Dresden plate for Odette in the joining hands bee. It's a classic of course, made modern by the fabric choices. I like it, but I do not see a Dresden plate quilt in my foreseeable future!

Merry Christmas everyone!

staying a little up to speed

We are moving in two weeks. And we are renovating our new home. So not so much sewing, but every now and then I sneak away to do just a little something. Beeblocks are perfect small projects!

I made a knot block for the creative quiltblock bee. She asked for colors which aren't my usual choices, but I think my block worked for the new total package which is off to Corinne Louise in France now! The background really remind me of moutarde de Dijon (french mustard)

And I made 2 blocks for the Comfort Circle (do good stitches) for my friend Muriel over at hopfaldera. She has a tutorial for this easy to make block on her blog. They remind me of old records. I'm sure this will make a lovely quilt all put together.

I'm putting together my top for the comfort circle now, so I hope I can show you next week!

flashy stars!

My friend Lotje (slootjesschilder.blogspot.com) is also in my new comfort circle over at do good stitches. She chose a block called: Ohio Star 4 patch Variation. A dreadfull name, but a lovely block! She was inspired by this quilt:

from Vintage Modern

A choice I can totally relate to; it's fresh, modern and has a real summer feel to it!

So I immediately cut in to my solid stash and added some bright colors, including some neons from Michael Miller. I love the result!

Is there anybody going to listen to my story

All about the girl who came to stay...

I'm a song thinker. Remember Ally McBeal who had a song for every occasion in her head? And could sing out loud without anyone thinking she was crazy. I'm like her in that way (not the 50kg or even less way). Because my parents loved the Beatles so, very often the theme song in my head is a Beatles one. And since my parents anniversary party is this afternoon and we're going to sing a homemade Beatles medley for them, I've been singing Beatles all day. Up to a point when even my kids were sick of me (-; And they love singing.

I was singing all yesterday evening too, until 01:00 sewing away on my present for them. This time I did start a few weeks ago, but life got in the way, so I had two blocks yesterday and now its a watchamacallit. (googleing) Table Runner I think. I never made one before. I don't own one even. But I think my mom, who asked me to make a tree-skirt (which I will probably never own either), will like it and see the use in it. If she doesn't she can do what she does like with it. It's the thought that counts.

I made three blocks with very good 40th wedding anniversary names (as you all know by now I'm a sucker for block names): The love knot, wedding ring and steps tot the altar. I chose a color combo I think blends in with my mom's living room. And I am pretty happy with the result! I added a beige border and chose to keep the binding in the same color. That's a first too and I think I like the effect. All your attention goes to the center. I machine bound it using an applique stitch to stitch it down on the front with a matching thread. That turned out quite good!

Steps to the altar

Wedding ring

Love knot
Pretty fancy right? I machine quilted it, but not to much. I didn't want it to be all stiff. Just following some straight lines, using the beige from the border. I love how this wasn't planned. I just started making a block, making another, thinking up the idea of a table runner, making another, choosing a border, etc. Just design as you go so to speak.

The Boys are also being very creative for their grandparents

So let's dress up, pack up and go to the party!
See you soon!

Starry Starry night

For the creative quiltblocks bee I made a rainbow star with a black background. Though I'm a really black and white girl when it comes to styling my home and my choice in clothes, I'm not at all one when it comes to quilts. I didn't have any black in my stash at all. I made a relatively simple paperpieced star. It's the january block from the Lucky Star BOM (Block of the month) over at Don't call me Betsy. And it turned out stunning, if I may say so myself. All the blocks together make a stunning picture too. But if I will ever make a rainbowy black background quilt myself, I don't know.

Bits and Pieces

My quilty friend Lotje and I went to the quilt-and patchworkfair in our neighborhood. We saw some lovely very old quilts and some inspiring new ones. Though the modern movement is not so much represented here in holland. Of course we scored some lovely fabric and other things.

I also made the Japanese X&+ blocks Nicolette asked us to make in the first round of the comfort circle of do good stitches.

Round Robin - Basket case

I made a starter block for a round robin of my own for the Double Dutch group. I used a tutorial from the random sampler over at Bloominworkshop! Such a lovely QAL, which I won't join since my to do list is too long as it is. But something like it sure is on my want to do list! I used a fresh aqua/green print by Amy Butler and a texty fabric (one of my favourites) for the background. Traditional but fresh and modern, don't you think? I love that combo.

bzzzz bee blocks update

Wishing everyone leaving for the quiltcon in Austin Texas this week (including my friend Lotje) lots of fun. I'm not jealous of you at all.... Maybe next year I will join you!

The background fabrics for my dutch pinwheels (4x5 blocks) finally arrived and I made the last three of them. You can find the others here. And I made a block for the creative quiltbee. The description was to make something improv, with aquas, pinks, red and a hint of green. So I selected some scraps and did something log cabin-ish. I love putting it together like a litlle puzzle. And I'm thinking up some handsewing for my vacation which won't take up to much space, because we have very limited luggage. Except for my hexy project (which isn't exactly small anymore, after 3 years of hand sewing) I'm not sure yet, any ideas?

wonky log cabin - instant satisfaction

I made a wonky log cabin block for the creative quilt bee I'm in. I love the lay-back approach of just picking up a scrap, sewing, cutting a little, pick up another scrap, etc. Why haven't I made a wonky log cabin quilt yet? And why haven't you? I used a tutorial from quiltdad. It makes me smile picturing  a man behind his sewing machine, I think it's really cool. And he makes beautiful things too!

bzzzz bee blocks update

I have chosen dutch pinwheels for the winterround of the 4x5 modern quiltbee. I like to choose symbolic blocknames and since I'm obviously dutch, this seemed like a symbolic choice, combined with a goodlooking but do-able block. It's made out of half square triangles. I have three to go, but I'm waiting for my background fabrics to arrive. Meanhwile we are enjoying the weather, It's cold and there's snow, but we're having fun sleighing and it will be over soon enough!

Double Dutch - flying high!

In the Netherlands (modern) quilting is not as popular as in the USA or Autsralia. So some girls decided to look up dutch girls on flickr and organise a sewing day. It was really nice to be around people who din't think your crazy if you cut up fabric and than sew it together again! We made a flickr group and are planning too organize some things together every once in a while. I also made some airplane blocks for my month in the care circle.

bzzzzzzz (bee blocks)

Vergeet mijn give away niet! Zie de zijbalk!
I made some bee blocks! They were fun and look great I think!

So far so good dus met de commitments.

scrappy trip along!

So many initiatives on the web caught my eye, I joined some initiatives in my sidebar. And I vowed to keep it at that. But than I automatically joined the winter quarter of the 4x5 modern quiltbee. And I couldn't help but fall in with a very big hype on the web now: the scrappy trip along. It is a real challenge to make it actually very scrappy and not to overthink it, but I love just grabbing some leftovers, cutting some strings and some mostly mindless sewing (though not to mindless). And you should see all the variations you get from the colour choices, but als form the very different layouts. Eye candy if you ask me. So check out the ever growing flickr group, the tutorial for the block is found here. Luckily I can do most of these initiatives in my own pace and maybe combine some. (perhaps chosing a star from the lucky stars bom as my block for the 4x5, or doing the dancing stars in my do good stitches month, a little creativity to still be part of all this goodness).

Wish me luck!

bee blocks - the christmas list

I finished some bee blocks. Somehow I need to get some commitments out of the way so I can focus on a christmas list! I made the "escalator" for the 99 and a Kaleidoscope for the creative bee blocks!
I'm finishing of with a list of christmas sewing ahead!
