churn dashing away

With my sewing place set up, I couldn't wait to start a little project. And on my to do list I found the september block for do good stitches (Comfort circle). Alphenquilts asked for a churn dash block, which is a real classic, but I had never made it before. I love it! She asked for low volume backgrounds and bright pastels. I sometimes have a hard time deciding how to define such terms, so I just make what I like in the spirit of the blocks the others make. I'm really excited about this block and I think it will make a lovely baby quilt for someone on my list too!

The boys are getting used to the appartement. Look at the big one practicing his angry look. We were baking some together today.

I was glad some of the batter made it into the cake.

Granny's front porch

Another block name to love. This pattern was made by Canoe Ridge Creations. And I chose it for my month in the comfort circle over at do good stitches. A lot of blocks together will make a whole new pattern. I asked my beemates to make the blocks in pink, red orange or yellow with a neutralish background! I'm curious what will turn up in my mailbox next month!

buckeye beauty's

If you come here more often you know I'm a sucker for quilt block names. I was intrigued by the name buckeye beauty, I guessed around what it would be, it sounds so american to me. I found out it is a butterfly. Linda of the creative quiltblock bee asked to make one for her. She asked for a traditional colorful feel. Even though, as many of you know, I have many many fabrics. I own very little traditional ones. But if you use some fabrics in different combinations than you would normally do, you get a more traditionalish feel. At least, I think my blocks blend in well enough like this.
Though I like that it looks nice for Linda, this is a "so not me" quilt. But that's the nice thing about joining a bee, you make things you never dreamed you would ever make. It changes your take on things, you have to get over your thresholds and consider new blocks, colors and combo's. I like doing it every time!

I made 2 to help out one of the bee members who isn't feeling well and got a little behind.
The block was easy to make and I am wondering how it would look if you would have used all sollids. Or if you would have chosen a few fabrics to use through all the blocks, you can lay out some interesting patterns with them. You can find the tutorial here if you like to make one. Feeling versatile

I made some "broken dishes" blocks for the may month of the Comfort circle (do good stitches), using this tutorial.  It's a really traditional block and easy to make.

The basis of this block, of many many blocks actually are HST's, Half Square Triangles.
To make them you basically cut 2 contrasting squares, lay them on top of each other, right sides facing each other. Take a pen and a ruler and draw a diagonal line with a pen. Then just sew two lines 1/4 inch form the line you drew.

Cut on the drawn line and voila. You have a square made of  two triangles. I'm always amazed as to what you can make of them using different layouts. Just some examples:

Starry Starry night

For the creative quiltblocks bee I made a rainbow star with a black background. Though I'm a really black and white girl when it comes to styling my home and my choice in clothes, I'm not at all one when it comes to quilts. I didn't have any black in my stash at all. I made a relatively simple paperpieced star. It's the january block from the Lucky Star BOM (Block of the month) over at Don't call me Betsy. And it turned out stunning, if I may say so myself. All the blocks together make a stunning picture too. But if I will ever make a rainbowy black background quilt myself, I don't know.

Voor mijn creative quiltblocks bee maakte ik een regenboog ster met een zwarte achtergrond. Hoewel ik in mijn inrichting thuis en mijn kledingkeuze echt wel een heel zwart-wittig meisje ben, maak ik nooit iets met zwart erin als quilt. Ik zou er niet opkomen. Ik had zelfs geen zwarte stof. Ik maakte een relatief (ik loop altijd wel een beetje te klooien met deze methode) simpele gepaperpiecete ster. (dat betekent dat je op het papier naait). Ik gebruikte het patroon van de Starry Block of the Month club bij don't call me Betsy (het is het Januari blok). En hij werd eigenlijk, al zeg ik het zelf, wel heel cool. Als je alle blokken bij elkaar legt, Is het ook wel echt een mooi plaatje. Maar of ik nou om ben en zwart ga gebruiken voor mijn dekens, dat denk ik eigenlijk niet.

Bits and Pieces

My quilty friend Lotje and I went to the quilt-and patchworkfair in our neighborhood. We saw some lovely very old quilts and some inspiring new ones. Though the modern movement is not so much represented here in holland. Of course we scored some lovely fabric and other things.

Mijn quiltvriendinnetje Lotje en ik zijn samen naar de quilt- en patchworkdagen geweest. Er was een tentoonstelling van prachtige oude quilts, heel leuk om te zien. En ook wel een paar nieuwe inspirerende ideeën opgedaan. Het viel ons wel weer op dat de "moderne" stroming (wat dat dan ook precies mag zijn) nog niet zo heel goed vertegenwoordigd was op de beurs. Natuurlijk hebben we wel leuk geshopt.

I also made the Japanese X&+ blocks Nicolette asked us to make in the first round of the comfort circle of do good stitches. 
Ik maakte ook de Japanse X&+ blokken die Nicolette ons gevraagd had te maken voor de Comfort circle van do good stitches. Ik ben naar deze nieuwe Europese cirkel overgestapt, waar ook veel van min Double Dutch vriendinnen nu in zitten. Nicolette vroeg ons ze wat groter te maken. De tutorial van de kleinere versie vind je hier. Het is 1 van mijn favo blokken, ik wil er graag een keer een quilt van maken.
