economy finished top!

I don't even remember how many times I've blogged about this quilt, but the top is done. Drumrolls please!

I've made it more squarish in the end than I had planned. It will be a big throw for the couch. All this repetitive cutting, sewing, cutting, sewing etc. Finally led to this beauty and it was worth it I think!

Row row row your boat

gently down the stream. My son is learning how to play the piano and this is his go to song if the one he needs to study won't cooperate. I am thrilled that even after three months he still likes his lessons and plays often (without me asking, because I'm doing a be a less pushy mom course). I think it is a miracle how fast children can learn things, I really hadn't expected he could play this much already after 3 months!

And since I am making row after row after row of economy blocks too, it seemed like a good title for this post. After a weekend with little sewing, this is what I accomplished. I just need to put the rows together and we have a top!

135 economy blocks - the finish line

After this I will not bother you with my economy blocks. I now have 135 blocks. Enough for a 9x15 blocks quilt! Maybe one more time for a finished top and one for a finished quilt, but that will be it!

More economy blocks - just one batch to go

Maybe I am boring you with another pile of economy blocks. Maybe you should skip this one if so. But frankly I never get bored with them. They are so happy and bright and crisp. I have never in my life made this many blocks of the same design. But, to be honest, I have spread out making them over more than a year, and picking it up when I feel like it. I am excited for seeing the finish line! Just one more batch to go after this and I will have 135 blocks! How many?

Almost there - spring cleaning - saving the econmy

I've probably told you before: I can't handle having to many loose ends at one time. Since I am starting to pile up to many UFO's (Unfinished Objects) around me, my mind starts spinning and I do nothing usefull. I move piles around, pick things up and put them down, I want to start new things, but I won't let myself, etc. So it is time for spring cleaning in the sewing part of my brain!

Starting with the projects I have almost finished. I made some more economy blocks. I have the last ones cut (about 20 to go), but they need assembling. After that I can make the top!

On my quilty to do list:
- Finishing the economy block quilt
- Two baby gifts
- My farmers wife blocks (81-111 to go),
- And I have to get a move on since I have decided to start my next "historic" project: The 1718 coverlet quilt-along hosted by Sarah Fielke from the last piece and Mrs. Schenkmann Quilts. It is based on a book (for sale at Bol.com) where the patterns and explanations for the oldest dated British patchwork coverlet are explained. It involves a lot of applique, which I have never done much before. To keep up with the quilt along will not be realistic, but I am really curious to the more modern takes on this coverlet.

- The March comfort circle quilt.

So what am I doing blogging about it! I have to use my precious time sewing!

100 + in the economy race

I've decided I will go up to 135 and I have reached 104. What will I do after I finish I wonder. I love the mindless sewing up of these. And the saving up of pretty triangles, not worrying about the big picture, just sewing up blocks.

some more economy blocks

All through 2014 I have been working on three long term quilts. One is the farmer's wife quilt. My scrappy hexie of course and then there is the economy block quilt. If I cut into fabrics I always cut some pieces for them and put them aside until I have a pile ready for some chain sewing. I add more blocks to my pile and as soon as I have enough I will sew them together. I did another batch the other day! I love the results again, it will really be one of my favorite quilts!

The economy is showing progress

Not just internationally, also in my small studio. I have been working on an economy block quilt on the side, when cutting in to fabrics I cut some economy block size and put them in their own container. If I have need of some mindless sewing with happy colors I grab the container and chainpiece a few together. Instand satisfaction!

 

I always use the redpepperquilts tutorial, not the paperpiecing one, but the regular recipee. 60 economy blocks so far. Since they measure only 5,5 inch I do have some to go. I will probably need about 150 for a single bed quilt....

economy blocks

Inspired by the dutch economy I am happily and constantly working on my own economy (block quilt). When cutting in to some fabric for something else, I always lay aside a center or some small or bigger triangles in a zip loc bag. So whenever I feel like it, I can sew some blocks together. Since I usually have an hour or so to spare to sew, a few economy blocks, from already cut fabric, are always an easy option if I have no other inspiration, or my other projects overwhelm me. These are the results of some of these snatched hours, working on my economy. They will make a lovely bold and colorful quilt in the end I think, no deadlines, no pressure, just little beautiful blocks, just for me.

economy blocks - a pre-school companion

I've sewn together the economy blocks I received in the joining hands bee. It became a lovely top, with lots too see. I still want to make a bigger one someday, but I am to much int the farmers wife blocks right now and I have to finish a few quilts. My plan is that my son will bring this as his birthday treat to his new pre-school classroom. He will have a little of his mommy around when he is in school the next two years. They could really use it as an I spy (ik zie, ik zie, wat jij niet ziet) game and to cover dolls, play on it, ore make tents of it. So many possibilities!But it's still only a top for now!

more economy blocks and a Valenine´s present

He must love me! He made me a show off line as a surprise on valentines day! I sure love him!

And I made some more economy blocks. I know the cutting measurements by heart now and if I´m cutting for something else I also cut some economy pieces and put them in a special economy bag. So if I feel like it, I can make some blocks at any time!

Hexy and economy block update

In my first quarter goal post, (here), I promised update pictures. Since it wasn't so dark I made them last weekend!

I've been working on this scrappy hexagon quilt for about three years. I will need at least another three to finish it. But sometimes the beauty is in the making. I use scraps and 1 inch hexagons. You can find a tutorial on how to make them here. I usually make real progress on holidays when there is no sewing machine around. And of course watching my favorite series on the couch at night when I feel up to it. It measure about 1.20 meters square I think and it has at least a thousand hexagons in it!

I'm making another quilt with small(ish) blocks: economy blocks. You can find the tutorial here at one of my favorite blogs (redpepperquilts). A real hype has started around these block in the virtual quilting world. You can join on instagram #economyblockalong. In my month in the joining hands bee, I've asked my bee mates to help me make a start, because you need lots and lots of (5 inch) blocks to make a quilt! I have received lots of them from all the lovely ladies, but I still have some work to do.
