Some color in the new garden

My first finish for the first quarter of the finish along! It is my sister in law´s quilt! I Finished the top in december, you can find it here. I backed it with an orange linnen fabric and quilted in light blue with some FMQ practice using loops. I´m not good at it yet, but I like the result anyway! It´s bound with an orange-white checker fabric. I´ve made pictures in my new garden. The gardener has finished it´s renovation. I will do the planting myself in the spring. I´m so happy with it, I could dance.

Let's fly away! - a do good stitches finish

I have finally finished my do good stitches plane quilt. My first and last finish in the care circle, since I have now joined the european Comfort circle.

It's my second finish for the second quarter finish along with she can quilt, you can find my goal post here.
I asked for free interpretations of the tutorial from bad skirt and I got lots of pretty blocks from all over the world for it. I made a border around all of them and than cut them up wonky to make it look like the plains are moving in the sky. I backed it with a yellow gingham and some blue, quilted it with straight lines in green and gave it a green and white striped binding. I looove striped bindings.

List for the second quarter of the finish along

I'm not starting any new projects before finishing some! That's a line you haven't heard for the first or last time here. I am linking up two the goals for the second quarter over at She can quilt!

My goals will be to finish:

1. My scrappy trip quilt. I just have to bind it, so this one's easy 

2. My modern sampler of 4x5 blocks. I have a finished top now, so I need to make some backing, baste, quilt and bind. This ones definitely more challenging.

 3. Finish my first and last Care circle quilt (do good stitches) and donate it to Jopie's dromenquilts (both have they're own button on my side-bar). This one is not even a top yet and I'm already late to finish so I have to get a move on!

I have limited my commitments a little, but I do have to make a few bee-blocks, at least 1 round robin and some gifts in the mean time. So wish me luck!

Finish-A-Long - How are we doing?

In January I joined the Finish-A-Long over at she can quilt! I did it because I love finishing things, but not always the finishing process. Sometimes a new project is winking at me and I have a hard time sticking to my plan and finish a project first. In the finishing process my number one least favorite part is basting, I hate it. Quilting and binding are not so bad I think, I actually enjoy it. But the most favorite part is thinking out what to make and selecting fabrics. So that's always around the next corner calling to me : "You can bind it later", or something. So this quarter I decided to have earplugs for the voices in my head (though that is basically impossible) and focus on a few finishes. Of course I was a little over ambitious and forgot about some commitments I made in bees etc. But I did make some good progress! And  having the finish-a-long in the back of my head did help me to ignore new projects and spend an extra night or two sewing, so that really worked. You can find my original blog post here.

The progress!
First you see my goal from my first post, in blue how far I've come, and pics of course. 

Number 1: My 4x5 blocks. I have 12 blocks (from 2 quarters) in grey, aqua and green. I want to make a throw guilt out of them. Maybe for me, maybe for someone I love. So I need to make them in to a top, select/piece a backing, quilt and bind. And I don't even know who I will make a consistent top out of this. sashing/no sashing? Border/no border? en point? Add some blocks?

Now I have a top! I didn't want a traditional sampler. So I made lots of small flying geese, some trees, some half square triangles and added some panels of different fabric to make it in a more loose and creative top. I really did this row by row, how does it look, what will I add, etc. I loved doing it and I'm really happy wit the result. 

Number 2: I have finished the big boy top, but it's not a quilt yet. Mainly because I can't decide how to quilt it, secondly because making the sandwich is my least favorite part of quilting.

Number 3: I made some blocks for the scrappy trip along, which should be quick and fun (I'll tell you more about it later) and I want to fluently make and finish this one, maybe that will get my finishing mojo back!

I made lots more blocks, made them into a top, basted it and quilted it, only the binding is missing! So the grand reveal will be later, but it's almost done! I blogged about it here.

Overall I made progress on all three quilts, so I'm happy with the results. I think I will sign up for an other quarter of finishing! Will you?

Finishing the Trip

I made the last blocks for the trip. I blogged about it here, here and here. And finished the top. Maybe I will add a border to add some size. There are 25 blocks and it measures about 150 cm square. I love the result. Making the blocks wasn't hard. I did it in stages. Collecting and cutting fabrics from scraps and stash. Making the first sewing round (joining sic strips) for a few blocks, ironing. Cutting them up and doing the second sewing round (joining the rows) and ironing again. Than back to step 1. etc. I entered it for the finish-along. The first quarter ending at the end of march. Don't know if I will make that, but good progress anyhow!

Ik maakte de laatste blokken voor de Scrappy trip along. Ik blogde er al eerder over, hier en hier en hier. Ik zette ook de top al in elkaar. Het zijn nu 25 blokken en hij is ongeveer 150 cm in het vierkant. Misschien zet ik er nog een rand aan om hem echt 2 persoons te maken (nog nooit eerder gedaan, lijkt mij een quiltdrama, maar goed, eens moet de eerste keer zijn). Hij is echt heel leuk geworden. Kleurig en vrolijk!

De blokken maken was niet heel moeilijk, maar wel best veel werk. Ik deed het elke keer in stappen. Ik verzamelde stofjes uit mijn restjes en mijn voorraadje en sneed de stroken. Dan ging ik elke keer 6 stroken bij elkaar zoeken en aan elkaar naaien + strijken. Laatste stap was ze weer aan stukken snijden, opnieuw aan elkaar naaien en weer.... je raadt het al, strijken. Terug naar stap 1, etcetera. Er zijn dus best wel wat avondjes in gegaan, maar als je er elke keer een paar doet en je wordt niet hysterisch als er af en toe een paar mm afwijking in zit, dan is het goed te doen!

Ik had hem ook opgegeven voor de finish along. Eigenlijk moet hij dan eind maart af zijn, of ik dat haal.... Maar ja in elk geval weer flinke voortgang!

big boy finish

I finished the quilt. I finished the top around christmass, but was still contemplating on the binding and quilting. Lots of suggestions were given on my last post and while showing it at the double dutch quilt meet. Though my sign is scales, I'm usually not a very doubtful person, so being this insecure about it, didn't feel good. But when Betty suggested I should make circles, like casting a stone in the water to match all the squareness in the quilt, something clicked. That's what I would do. After that I had to step over the treshold to actually do it, because though Betty said it wouldn't be that hard, just the word circle gives me the chills. And though I love the effect I did have to pick out a lot of quilting because there would be folds in the back even I couldn't ignore. But I think it didn't have to much to do with the quilting pattern and more with my sloppy basting. 

De grote jongens quilt voor Fedde is af!. Ik had de top al rond de kerstmis af. Ik was nog aan het worstelen met hoe het te quilten en welke kleur bies ik er op zou zetten. Jullie gaven mij al heel veel goede ideeën als reactie op mijn vorige post hierover en ik kreeg er nog meer toen ik hem meenam naar de quiltmeet met Double Dutch. Hoewel mijn sterrenbeeld weegschaal is ben ik niet een twijfelaar van nature. Geen beeld hebben van hoe het af te maken was geen lekker gevoel. Maar toe Betty zei je moet cirkels maken, 1 aftekenen met bijv. een bord en dan met je "walking foot" en het afstandmeetijzertje (ik kan hier geen beter woord voor verzinnen) steeds grotere cirkels er om heen. Vooral rond om al het vierkante erin te matchen, alsof je een steen in al het blauw van het water gooit... Toen klikte er iets. Dat moest het worden. Maar stap 2 was om het ook echt te gaan doen. Alles met rond en cirkels en naaien vind ik beangstigend. Maar goed, de finish along hijgde in mijn nek en ik moest aan de slag. En het patroon zelf was niet moeilijk, maar ik moest toch wel veel quiltwerk uithalen, omdat de achterkant niet glad bleef. Zo ernstig dat zelfs ik het niet kon negeren. Dat had denk ik meer te maken met dat het basten niet helemaal goed was gegaan. Maar het effect is echt geweldig, vind ik!

For the binding I decided to step out of the color scheme and added a bold orangy linnen I had lying around. I'm really glad I did, because it really ads some spice to the mix! The backing is a sturdy Ikea gingham with some strips leftover from the front. 

Voor de bies ben ik echt afgeweken van het blauw groenige thema. Ik koos knallend linnen oranje. Een stof die ik denk ik al 8 jaar had liggen uit mijn kleding naai periode. Ik ben er blij mee, hij maakt hem
net wat pittiger! De achterkant is een stoere ikea donkerblauwe ruit met wat stroken die ik over had van de voorkant.

Finish along

I love finished things, but not always finishing them. So I joined the Finish-along over at she can quilt. I have three projects that need finishing this quarter. I can't have to many unfinished things lying around, because I can't handle that and forbid myself to start new things, than I don't sew at all, which makes me cranky, etc. etc. 

Ik vind afgemaakte dingen geweldig, maar afmaken soms wat minder leuk. Ik heb me aangesloten bij de Finish-along bij She can quilt. Ik heb 3 projecten die ik dit kwartaal wil afmaken (tenminste). Ik kan niet te veel dingen hebben liggen die niet af zijn. Die zitten me dan in de weg en dan mag ik geen nieuwe dingen van mezelf meer starten (wat ik dan soms toch stiekem doe, wat zegt dat dan weer ove mij?) en ik ga dan helemaal niet meer naaien uit een soort ballorigheid dat ik geen zin heb om dingen af te maken. Daar wordt ik dan weer knorrig van, etc. Voorkomen dus! De volgende projecten ken je denk ik uit vorige posts, dus ik zal de uitleg niet vertalen. Als je vagen hebt? etc.
